Community Work in Peru

Program: The Global Citizens Program Location: Peru Year: Summer 2024

Through The Global Citizens Program, I spent a week working alongside local Indigenous communities in Peru, helping with their day-to-day chores and farm work. I helped cultivate crops including potatoes, quinoa, cacao, peanuts, and maize.

How it shaped my interest in inequality

The trip took me from the city of Lima to the outskirts of Cusco, and the difference in how people lived was hard to miss. In the communities near Cusco, people relied on their own crops and on traditional medicinal treatments, with healthcare far from the standard available in the city. It reminded me of the healthcare disparity gap, and it is a big part of why I care about who can and can't reach modern medicine. That question is at the center of BioPolicy.
